At the beginning of this year, I set a business goal for myself. This was something that I had refused to do for years — why set goals that I can’t control? But it felt true this time, as a commitment to myself. I said it out loud that I’ll have a certain number of clients by the end of the year.
Now that I’m more than half way through the year, I’m still working hard to get to that number. At the same time, I ask myself every single day why does it feel so busy, yet I’m not at my goal? I question if I even have space for more clients at the moment.
It turns out I already had what I was looking for, but I had been blind to it for months! I was so fixated on how my clients have to show up that I completely compartmentalized other areas of my life.
This business isn’t my only gig. I’m also a coach for an amazing company that trains transformational teachers to make huge impact in the world. Because I didn’t have to work to get those clients, somehow in my mind, they didn’t count. Because they were literally handed to me on a silver platter, my brain didn’t even know how to take credit for it.
Somehow, in our minds, anything that comes easily doesn’t count towards our accomplishments.
This realization only came when I thought about how much I enjoy working with these people. They show up ready to dig deep, they are ready to do whatever it takes to empower themselves. They are committed, not only to transform their own lives, they are committed to being a gift to others. They are committed to being authentic, powerful, and living a life that’s true for them.
What I was searching for was a feeling, and I’ve been getting that feeling for months without seeing it.
I would not trade these clients for anything. It’s a privilege to be their coach, and yet, I didn’t think that I had earned it.
When I count those clients, I have already exceeded my goal for the year. They are definitely my ideal clients, yet I didn’t recognize them. Being fixated on how a client needs to show up has totally blinded me. I thought the goal would finally give me the validation that “I’ve made it as a coach.” But more often than not, what we are searching for is a feeling. It may be a feeling of fulfillment, a feeling of purpose, a feeling of aliveness.
Whatever it is that you want, it may be happening right in front of you— if you’re willing to see it!
If you are fixated on how the result needs to show up, and wondering why you’ve been working so hard without getting the results, I invite you to open your mind and heart to see how this feeling may already be showing up in your life without achieving the goal.
Now that I finally see what’s been filling up my life, I really have limited space to take on new clients. If you would like to fall in love with your life, maybe without even having to change anything, I invite you to have a conversation with me and grab that spot now.
Let’s talk. It’s time for you to really “see” you and you life.
